JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Hampden-Sydney College posted a second-round score of 296 in men's golf on Saturday for a 36-hole total of 586 (290-296) to stand in a tie for sixth place among 30 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia. Freshman John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount is leading the Tigers, ranked 14th in the latest Golfstat NCAA Division III Top 25, with his three-under par 70-71--141 at the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes' course, tied for fifth among 150 golfers.
Ferguson (pictured, credit Derrick Davis) is being followed by junior Adam Hade/Richmond (69-74--143, t-16), sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (74-76--150, t-64), senior Jamie Agnew/Fairfax (77-75--152, t-83) and junior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (81-78--159, t-119).
No. 1 Emory (Ga.) is leading the event with its rounds of 289-283--572, while No. 2 Huntingdon (Ala.) (290-285) and No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan (288-287) are tied for second at 575. No. 37 Oglethorpe (Ga.) (580) is fourth, followed by No. 16 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) (584) in fifth, while the Tigers are tied with No. 7 Methodist (N.C.) and No. 41 Sewanee (Tenn.) at 586 in the field that includes 14 of the Top 25 ranked programs in Division III and 23 of the Top 50 overall. Drew Mathers of Huntingdon has the individual lead at seven-under 69-68--137.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on Sunday on Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia.
