HARRISONBURG, VA-The Hampden-Sydney golf team opened its fall season with a fourth-place finish in the Tom Kinder Memorial Golf Tournament, hosted by Bridgewater College. The 36-hole event, usually held over two days, was played in full on Monday to avoid incoming weather on Tuesday. As a team, the Tigers shot ten-over par in the 15 team field. Guilford won the event at an impressive 16-under par, while North Carolina Wesleyan (+4) and Ferrum (+8) rounded out the top three.
Austin Fockler (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) was the top Tiger, finishing sixth overall while rounds of 72 and 69 put him three-under par. Freshman Rob Witherspoon (Richmond, VA/Cosby) had a strong debut, using rounds of 74 and 72 to finish two-over par and tie for 12th.
Freshman Allen Smith (Durham, NC/Durham Academy) was just three strokes behind Witherspoon, tying for 20th at five-over par. One stroke behind Smith was Parker Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier), whose rounds of 76 and 74 tied him for 25th.
Freshman Dylan Taylor (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) rounded out the group, tying for 33rd at nine-over par with rounds of 76 and 77.
The Tigers will return to action Sunday, September 17 as they compete in the Shenandoah Invitational at the Winchester Country Club.
