DATAW ISLAND, SC-The Hampden-Sydney golf team opened its spring season with a strong start, tying for second place in the TaylorMade-ADIDAS Intercollegiate. Indian Hills Community College ran away with the event, finishing 26 over-par while the Tigers and Carnegie Mellon tied for second at 68 over-par.
Freshman Bruce Shober (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) paced the Tigers with a ninth-place finish after shooting rounds of 80, 76, and 72 (+12).
Junior Parker Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) placed 16 while finishing 16 over-par (74-75-83-232), and Alex Simmons (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) used rounds of 82, 76, and 81 to finish 28 at 23 over-par.
Sophomore Jamie Agnew (Fairfax, VA/Flint Hill School) and junior Aaron Persily (Charleston, WV/Charleston Catholic) each tied for 38 at 28 over-per to round out the group. Agnew shot rounds of 76, 89, and 79; Persily shot 83, 84, and 77.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action March 17 as the Tigers compete in the Jekyll Island College Invitational in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
