Two Golfers Named All-ODAC, O'Connell and Main Major Award Winners

FOREST, VA-Senior Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) and head golf Coach Mac Main claimed ODAC Player and Coach of the Year honors, respectively, as announced at the ODAC Golf Championships at Rock Barn Golf & Spa this weekend. Junior Brian Burt (Holt, MI/Eastern Michigan) claimed First Team All-ODAC honors with O'Connell.

Guilford's Tanner Gross and Nick Shedd were named the ODAC Rookie and ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

O'Connell is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III individual ratings by Golfstat (, the highest ranking of any ODAC golfer, and he currently ranks second in the ODAC in average strokes-per-match at 73.1 through his 17 rounds. O'Connell started out the year with three top-ten finishes in the Fall, including medalist honors in the Ted Keller Memorial Tournament. This Spring, O'Connell helped the Tigers to two top-three finishes, while individually finishing in the top-20 in all four of the Tigers' tournaments. His season was highlighted with a second place finish in the TaylorMade-ADIDAS Intercollegiate with a score of three over par. O'Connell has now earned First Team All-ODAC honors twice, also earning the accolade in 2012.

Main, in his second season guiding the Tigers, led his squad to the second-lowest team average in the conference at 300.6, just 1.2 strokes short of Guilford.  He's coached a pair of Tigers to the top-ten by Golfstat, with O'Connell and Burt ranking ninth and tenth, respectively. Hampden-Sydney is currently rated #20 in the Golfstat team rankings and #21 in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll. The Tigers finished atop the leaderboard in three events this season, winning the Tom Kinder Memorial, Virginia State Intercollegiate, and Ted Keller Memorial.

Burt had an outstanding season for the Tigers in his first year donning the Garnet and Grey. The junior transfer leads the ODAC at 72.7 strokes-per-round. In the Fall, Burt had four top-five finishes, including a first place finish at the Virginia State Intercollegiate, and second place finish in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational. He finished in the top ten in three of the Tigers' four tournaments this Spring, while winning the TaylorMade-ADIDAS Intercollegiate and placing second in the Pine Needles Invitational.
