SOUTHERN PINES, NC-The 10th ranked Hampden-Sydney golf team posted a third place finish at the Pine Needles Invitational in its spring opener. The Tigers shot a two-day total of 615, tying Averett for third. Guilford College, behind medalist Nicholas Shedd, won the event with a total score of 588. Cape Fear Community College rounded out the top three with a score of 610.
Junior Brian Burt (Holt, MI/Eastern Michigan) led the Tigers while finishing second overall, shooting rounds of 76 and 71 (147). Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) was seven strokes off Burt, placing 15th overall with two rounds of 77 (154).
Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) placed 17th overall, shooting a 75 on day one and an 82 on day two.
Alex Simmons (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) rounded out the Tigers', finishing 21st and 22nd, respectively. Both shot 84s on day one, and Simmons posted a 77 to Whiting's 78 on day two.
Shedd took home medalist honors, shooting rounds of 69 and 74 to lead the Quakers.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action March 10 as the Tigers head to Detaw Island, South Carolina to compete in the Detaw Island Invitational.
