FOREST, VA-After a strong fall and a reaching as high as a number ten national ranking, the Hampden-Sydney golf team has been picked to finish second in the ODAC Preseason Golf Poll. The Tigers, receiving two first place votes and 74 points, are second only to preseason favorite Guilford, who received eight first place votes and 80 points. Washington & Lee (61 points) and Bridgewater (60 points) round out the top four.
Hampden-Sydney had one of the best fall seasons in school history with three first place finishes, one second place, and one third place finish.
This spring, the Tigers welcome back third team choice George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) (76.2; 9 rounds), in addition to former first team selection (2012) Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) (72.9; 7 rounds). O'Connell, who won the Ted Keller Memorial in October, is second to teammate Brian Burt (Holt, MI/Eastern Michigan) (72.8; 9 rounds) on the conference's average lists coming into the spring season. Burt placed in the top-five in 4-of-5 tournaments participated, including an individual victory at the Virginia State Intercollegiate. The Tigers will also rely upon the championship experience of Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) (76.4; 9 rounds) and Trey Cully (Studley, VA/Hanover) (76.7; 9 rounds).
The Tigers are currently beginning their spring season at the Pine Needles Invitational.
