CAMP LEJEUNE, NC-The Hampden-Sydney golf team placed ninth in the 16 team field of the Scarlett Division in the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate this past weekend. As a team, the Tigers shot 35 over par for the three round event, placing them one stroke ahead of Randolph-Macon and two strokes ahead over Roanoke. Guilford College shot 11 over as a group to win the event. Christopher Newport (+14) and Berry (+15) rounded out the top three.
The Tigers were paced by a solid performance from Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland). The sophomore shot par (212) for the tournament courtesy rounds of 72, 69, and 71.
The Tigers' four other participants are all consistent and within three strokes of each other. Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) was 12 strokes behind O'Connell as his rounds of 79, 72, and 73 gave him a three-day total of 224.
Trey Culley (Studley, VA/Hanover) was a stroke behind Arnold with a 225 (75, 76, 74). Placing fourth for the Tigers was Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) while his 80, 72, and 74 gave him a 226. Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) rounded out the group with a 227 overall (81, 72, 74).
Roanoke's Brandon Ketron was the top overall finisher shooting six under par with scores of 69, 68, and 69.
