Hampden-Sydney Falls To Eastern Mennonite 70-56

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Chaise Johnson/Richmond scored a team-high 18 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 70-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision to Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.  Sophomore Drew Scott/Franklin, Tenn. added 11 points for the host Tigers (4-17, 1-13 ODAC), who were tied with the visitors at 33-33 at halftime.  Tim Jones scored a game-high 22 points for the Royals (10-13, 5-9 ODAC), while Sammy Thomas added 16 points.

H-SC took an early 4-2 advantage at 18:15 after back-to-back jumpers by Scott. The Tigers led 10-7 at 15:04 following a three-point field goal from Johnson, and the hosts led 16-13 at 11:17 after another jumper by Scott.  H-SC took its largest lead at 21-15 with 8:47 left in the half, courtesy of a three-pointer from freshman Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C.  EMU scored six unanswered points to tie it at 21-21 at 6:46, and the Royals led 29-25 at 4:14.  The Tigers used a quick 7-2 run to lead 32-31 at 1:41, getting points from freshman Warren Zager/Nashville, Tenn.(2), junior Kevin Quinn/Durham, N.C.(3) and Johnson (2). The contest was tied at 33-33 at the intermission.

EMU began the second half with a 9-4 run to lead 42-37 at 17:53, but H-SC responded with an 8-4 run of its own to close within 46-45 at 14:20.  Scott and Johnson each made three-pointers, and Scott added another jumper, as well.  The Tigers were still within 52-50 at 11:53 following another three-pointer by Atwood, but the Royals used a 12-2 run to lead 64-52 with 6:24 remaining.  EMU extended the run to 17-3 for its largest lead at 69-53 with just 2:54 left on the clock toward the final margin.

Johnson led H-SC with his team-high 18 points, adding three rebounds and a game-high three steals.  Scott finished with his 11 points for the Tigers, adding three rebounds.  Atwood had seven points and three rebounds, while Quinn contributed six points off the bench.  H-SC shot 38% (21-55) from the field, including 33% (7-21) on three-pointers, and 58% (7-12) at the free throw line.

Jones led EMU with his game-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and four assists.  Thomas finished with 16 points for the Royals, while Travis Clower contributed 11 points.  EMU shot 47% (26-55) from the field, including 26% (5-19) on three-pointers, and 65% (13-20) at the line.

H-SC will remain at home to host the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, February 13, at 7 p.m. for Senior Night at Fleet Gym.  The Tigers will conclude the regular season on the road at Emory & Henry College on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 4:30 p.m. in Emory.
