Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Eastern Mennonite Saturday

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College is hosting Eastern Mennonite University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball game on Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.  The Tigers are 4-16 overall, 1-12 in the ODAC, while the Royals are 9-13 overall, 4-9 in the ODAC.  The contest can be heard locally on WFLO Radio, 95.7 FM.

Scouting the Tigers
H-SC is coached by 11th-year head coach Dee Vick '94, who has led the program to an overall record of 156-136 (tied for second all-time in wins), including 81-92 in the ODAC.  Vick is assisted by Chuck Thomas, T.J. Grimes and Daniel Eacho.

H-SC has dropped a highly uncharacteristic 14 consecutive contests, including nine-straight ODAC games.  The Tigers have been led this season by junior guard Chaise Johnson/Richmond, who is averaging 10.7 points and 2.7 rebounds.  He is followed by junior guard/forward Kevin Quinn/Durham, N.C. (9.0 points, 3.1 rebounds), freshman forward Warren Zager/Nashville, Tenn. (8.4 points, 5.4 rebounds), sophomore center/forward Jake Hahn/Ruckersville (8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds) along with senior forward and team captain Justin Reid/Cary, N.C. (6.3 points, 3.0 rebounds).  H-SC is averaging 66.2 points per game, while allowing 79.2 points to opponents.

Scouting the Royals
EMU is coached by first-year head coach Melvin Felix.  The Royals, who defeated H-SC 65-49 on January 5 in Harrisonburg, have lost five-straight games and seven of its last eight contests overall ... the lone win being a 68-66 road win at Virginia Wesleyan on Jan. 16.  EMU has been led by seniors Travis Clower (13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds) and Sammy Thomas (13.2 points, 6.4 rebounds) along with sophomore Tim Jones (12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds).  The Royals are averaging 71.6 points, while yielding 74.7 points.

Last Time They Met
Freshman Tyler Thomas/Farmville scored a career-high nine points off the bench, while Chaise Johnson and Kevin Quinn, along with Warren Zager, each added eight points for the visiting Tigers.  Travis Clower led EMU with 18 points, Tariq Caldwell finished with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and DJ Hill had 11 points and five rebounds.  The Royals led 34-14 at halftime and H-SC could get no closer than 14 points in the second half.

Tigers Among ODAC Leaders
Chaise Johnson leads the ODAC in free throw percentage (88.7%, 63-71).  Sophomore Brendan McHale/Charleston, S.C. ranks fourth in assists (3.9) and 14th in assist/turnover ratio (1.7).  Freshman Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C. ranks sixth in three-point field goal percentage.  Jake Hahn ranks 11th in field goal percentage (51.3%, 60-117).
