Hampden-Sydney Drops Road Contest At Eastern Mennonite 65-49

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Freshman Tyler Thomas/Farmville scored a career-high nine points off the bench, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 65-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday in Harrisonburg.  Juniors Chaise Johnson/Richmond and Kevin Quinn/Durham, N.C., along with freshman Warren Zager/Nashville, Tenn., each added eight points for the visiting Tigers (4-8, 1-4 ODAC).  Travis Clower scored a game-high 18 points for the Runnin Royals (8-6, 3-2 ODAC), while Tariq Caldwell added 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

H-SC was within 4-2 early following a layup by Zager at 17:33, and the Tigers trailed 14-6 after a layup from Quinn at 9:20.  EMU extended its lead to 27-9 before Zager scored on another layup at 3:29 to make it 27-11, and it was 29-14 when Quinn connected on a three-point field goal at 2:47.  Unfortunately, the Runnin Royals led 34-14 at the intermission after scoring the final five points of the half.

H-SC scored the first four points of the second half to get within 34-18 at 17:04, as Zager and sophomore Jake Hahn/Ruckersville each scored on layups.  A three-point field goal by Quinn at 14:40 made it 42-24, and the Tigers kept battling and were within 49-33 with 9:52 remaining after a three-pointer from sophomore Drew Scott/Franklin, Tenn.  H-SC was able to close the margin down the stretch, though only to within 14 points on two occasions late in the contest … 58-44 at 1:37 following two free throws by Johnson and 63-49 with 53-seconds left after a three-pointer by Thomas.

Thomas led H-SC with his career-high nine points off the bench, adding three rebounds in nine minutes, while playing in just his second game with the program after transferring from Guilford (N.C.) College.  Johnson, Quinn and Zager each finished with eight points for the Tigers, with Zager adding five rebounds and Johnson adding four rebounds.  Senior captain Justin Reid/Cary, N.C. had six points and four rebounds.  H-SC shot 32% (19-60) from the field, including 29% (6-21) on three-pointers, and 63% (5-8) at the free throw line.

Clower led EMU with his game-high 18 points, including 9-10 free throws.  Caldwell finished with 12 points and his game-high 17 rebounds for the Runnin Royals, while DJ Hill had 11 points and five rebounds.  EMU shot 35% (18-52) from the field, including 35% (7-20) on three-pointers, and 67% (22-33) at the line.

H-SC is idle for the upcoming week before returning home for the first time since December 15 to host ODAC member Washington and Lee University at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m.
