Hampden-Sydney Falls To Mount Aloysius (Pa.) 72-64

GALLATIN, Tenn. -- Senior Malik Crute/Richmond scored 19 points, and junior Chaise Johnson/Richmond added 13 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 72-64 non-conference basketball decision to Mount Aloysius (Pa.) College on Saturday at the D3 Music City Classic in Gallatin, Tennessee.  Julian Stover scored a game-high 20 points, and Carlos Palacios had 18 points for the Mounties (7-4) against the Tigers (4-5).

Hampden-Sydney and Mount Aloysius were tied early at 5-5 with 16:39 on the clock after a basket by senior Justin Reid/Cary, N.C., but the Mounties used a 12-2 run to lead 17-7 at 12:34 after making their fifth three-point field goal to open the contest.  MAC took its largest lead of the half at 31-18 with 3:06 left until halftime, before the Tigers closed with an 8-5 run to trail 36-26 at the intermission. Crute had six points at the break, while Reid and junior Kevin Quinn/Durham, N.C. each scored five first-half points.

Hampden-Sydney scored the first six points of the second half en route to quick 14-5 outburst to close to within 41-40 at 15:23.  Sophomore Brendan McHale/Charleston, S.C. got it started with a three-pointer, Crute followed with three free throws, and Johnson added a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around an offensive rebound basket from freshman Warren Zager/Nashville, Tenn.  Mount Aloysius answered with a 10-1 run to lead 51-41 at 11:47, but the Tigers responded with seven-straight points from Crute (2) and Johnson (5) to trail 51-48 with 9:15 remaining.  Unfortunately, H-SC would get no closer as the Mounties used a 14-3 run to take their largest lead at 65-51 with 4:32 left to play.  The Tigers did score eight unanswered points to get within 65-59 at 2:22, but MAC made 7-12 free throws over the final 1:49 to gain the victory.

Crute led Hampden-Sydney with his 19 points, adding three assists and a game-high four steals.  Johnson finished with 13 points and three assists for the Tigers, while Quinn had eight points and six rebounds off the bench.  Reid, McHale and Zager each contributed five points, and Zager had six rebounds, as well.  H-SC shot 39% (21-54) from the field, including 28% (7-25) on three-pointers, and 58% (15-26) at the free throw line.

Stover led Mount Aloysius with his game-high 20 points, adding eight rebounds and four assists.  Palacios finished with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Mounties, while Josiah Jones had 13 points and eight rebounds.  MAC shot 46% (23-50) from the field, including 44% (12-27) on three-pointers, and 58% (14-24) at the line.

Hampden-Sydney will play MacMurray (Ill.) College on Sunday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. on day two of the event being played near Nashville.
