Tigers Dominate Second Half to Defeat Regent 74-40

Hampden-Sydney Basketball outscored the Regent University Royals 44-17 in the second half to win 74-50 on Tuesday night. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Scoring came at a premium in the first half as cold shooting and a strong defensive performance from the Tigers keep the score low and the game close for most of the half
  • Regent went without a made field goal for the first six minutes of the game, finally getting one to go in at 13:43, but H-SC had just six points
  • The game was played within a margin of 1-6 with the Tigers leading 21-20 at 4:54, but Hampden-Sydney closed out the half on a strong note with a 9-2 run to go into the half ahead 30-23
  • H-SC scored the first eight points of the second half to break open the game and held the Royals without a point over the first 5:08 of the frame.
  • H-SC would lead by double digits the remainder of the half, seeing the lead balloon to as many as 34

  • Cole Atwood contributed nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and one block in seven minutes of action as a reserve. He shot 3-5 from the floor and 2-4 from the three point line.
  • Kevin Quinn posted team-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds
  • Chaise Johnson and Jack Wyatt tallied 11 points
  • Warren Zager posted six points, eight rebounds, three steals, and one assist

FOR THE FOES

  • Vincent Reed-Berry led the Royals with 12 points
  • Andrew Aiken chipped in with five points and 10 rebounds

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC shot 41.9% for the game with a 48.6% mark in the second half
  • Regent went 24.1% from the floor and 18.8% after halftime
  • Both teams struggled beyond the arc with H-SC going 4-29 and Regent 3-18
