Malik Crute nailed a foot-on-the-line jumper from the top of key with only 1.9 seconds remaining to lift Hampden-Sydney Basketball to a 67-65 win over Shenandoah.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • H-SC started out cold from the field and found themselves down 10-2 and without a made field goal after four minutes of play
  • Chaise Johnson would drain a three pointer on the next possession and followed with a layup off a turnover to spark the Tigers
  • Trailing 15-11 after seven minutes, H-SC made a layup and connected on back-to-back trifectas to go in front 19-15 at 11:29. H-SC would go on to add a free throw to build their lead to five
  • Up four following a Brendan McHale triple, Shenandoah found the bottom of the net on consecutive threes and scored on a layup to give the Hornets a four-point advantage at 5:06
  • Crute put the hosts down only one on a jumper beyond the arc 20 seconds later, but neither team would score a point again until Derrick Perry finished off a dunk at 1:36
  • Hunter Kuehn would eventually tie the game on a three-point play at 45 seconds, and both teams went scoreless the rest of the half to make it a 32-32 game heading into halftime
  • Nick Chase and Jake Hahn scored the first six points of the half to push the Tigers out to a 38-32 lead, but that would prove to be the largest lead either team would have the rest of the day in a back-and-forth game that saw 11 ties and 10 lead changes
  • H-SC would continue to lead by a slim margin until a Jayln Jarrett layin at 12:45 put SU up 44-43, but the Tigers reeled off a 6-0 spurt to go back up by five at 11:14
  • Shenandoah answered back with their own 6-0 run to regain a one-point lead at the 8:42 mark
  • The game would see a lead change or a tie on every scoring possession the rest of the contest
  • With H-SC down 63-61 at 1:34 after an Aaron Patterson layup, Kuehn tied the game on a hook shot from the baseline at 1:07, but Christopher Chaney managed to tip in a missed shot while several players were fighting for the rebound with 53 seconds left
  • Crute was fouled on a layup attempt and made both free throws to tie the game at the 40-second mark
  • The Hornets would turnover the ball on the ensuing possession, and with only five team fouls, they elected to use their one remaining foul before the bonus, giving the Tigers only eight seconds to work with
  • Following a timeout, the Tigers inbounded the ball to Crute. Nick Chase set a screen for him at the top of the arc, and with Shenandoah switching on the screen, Crute used one dribble to create space and drained the game-winning jumper
  • The Tigers looked to have stolen Shenandoah's inbounds pass but the Hornets called a timeout before the pass. Shenandoah got off a deep three-pointer off the buzzer that rolled off the rim and out
