Shenandoah University defeated Hampden-Sydney 85-65 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets seized control of the game from the opening tip, scoring seven of the first nine points and led 17-10 at the 13:51 mark
  • However, H-SC fought back and tied the contest at 19-19 off a Chaise Johnson three pointer at 10:43 and would take a two-point lead, 24-22, on a Guilherme Guimaraes jumper
  • With the contest tied at 30-30 at 7:50, SU went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes and rode that wave to a 44-36 advantage at halftime
  • The Hornets pushed their advantage to 11, 53-42, four minutes into the second half, but the Tigers tallied the next eight points to find themselves down only three at 13:03
  • Shenandoah countered with a 13-0 spurt to go out in front 66-50 with 8:08 remaining and H-SC would trail by at least nine the rest of the way

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Malik Crute posted a team-high 16 points along with four rebounds and three assists
  • Chaise Johnson recorded a season-high 13 points

FOR THE FOES

  • Aaron Patterson contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists
  • Christian Meredith tallied 17 points and four boards

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Shenandoah converted 55.4% of their field goal attempts while Hampden-Sydney shot 40.9%
  • The Hornets connected on 14 of their 24 three point tries compared to a 9-28 mark for the Tigers
  • SU also held an advantage at the foul line, going 9-17. H-SC had just two free throw attempts
  • Shenandoah had the edge in rebounding (38-30) but H-SC led 13-5 in second chance points
