Hampden-Sydney Basketball rallied from a halftime deficit behind hot shooting to defeat the Eastern Mennonite University Royals 80-73 on Wednesday night.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers were firing on all cylinders for much of the first half. Senior post players Hunter Kuehn and Nick Chase scored six of the game's first eight points, but Chase would set for the final 16 minutes of the half as he was hit with two quick fouls
  • With the score at 6-5, the Tigers unleashed an 11-2 run over two-and-a-half minutes to go ahead 17-7
  • The Royals Isaiah Harris-Winn scored the next four, but consecutive three pointers from Raheem Anthony and Will Sparks gave H-SC a 12-point lead, 23-11, with 10:23 remaining in the half
  • A flurry of turnovers and missed long range shots would fuel a 13-0 spurt from the Royals to take a 24-23 lead at 6:03
  • The half would remain tightly contested and the Royals went into intermission with a two-point edge, 37-35, following a Maleke Jones trifecta shortly before the end of the half
  • The Jones triple gave the Royals the momentum needed to take control of the game to open the second half as they opened on an 11-2 run to go out in front by 11, 48-37, just over three minutes into the stanza
  • Still trailing by 11, 52-41, at 15:42, Malik Crute converted a three pointer then went coast-to-coast for a layup to get the Tigers within six just 30 seconds later
  • H-SC trailed 62-58 at 7:23, but the Tigers took over from there
  • Back-to-back layups from Crute and Chase tied the game at the six-minute mark, and Kevin Quinn gave the Tigers their first lead of the half on a three point try at 5:36
  • Chase and Quinn then extended the run to 12-0 with a combined five points to put the Tigers up 70-62 at the 4:20 mark
  • Eastern Mennonite battled back behind three pointers from Rashawn Latimer and Maleke Jones to trim the deficit to two at 3:30
  • The Tiger defense locked down from there and Chase, Kuehn, and Crute scored the next four points to push the advantage back to six with 59 ticks left on the clock and H-SC would close out the game on the free throw line going 7-for-8 at the free throw stripe in the final minute
