Washington and Lee University defeated Hampden-Sydney Basketball 92-67 in each team's ODAC opener on Sunday afternoon. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • H-SC took the early advantage, leading 5-0 and then 9-5 at 15:32,
  • The Generals reeled off 16 of the next 18 points to surge ahead 21-11 midway through the first half
  • W&L went up 46-25 with 59 seconds to go in the opening stanza, but the Tigers secured the last four points of the half with a Will Sparks jumper at seven seconds followed by a Malik Crute steal and W&L foul in the bonus leading to two free throw makes from Crute
  • The second half went the Generals way as the Tigers trailed by at least 14 the rest of the game 

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Malik Crute scored a game-high 14 points to go with five steals, four assists, three rebounds, and one block in 19 minutes
  • Nick Chase and Raheem Anthony each contributed nine points

FOR THE FOES

  • Clayton Murtha recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds
  • Devin Kearns tallied 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals
  • Alex Starr tacked on 12 points
  • Curtis Mitchell grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench 

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Hampden-Sydney shot 38.1% overall and 23.1% from three point range with three makes. Washington and Lee shot 44.9% from the floor and made 10 three pointers at a 40% clip
  • The Generals outrebounded the Tigers 51-32. They held a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass, leading to a 19-3 advantage in second chance points
  • H-SC had 21 turnovers leading to 23 W&L points while the Generals gave the ball away 18 times for 16 Tiger points
