Football Falls 32-19 at Ferrum

FERRUM, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team had a two-game win streak snapped, falling 32-19 to Ferrum on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers took an early lead, but Ferrum used a big third quarter, outscoring Hampden-Sydney 17-0 in the stanza en route to victory. The Tigers now stand at 3-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Panthers improve to 4-3 and 2-3 in ODAC play.

The Tigers were first to strike in the game, though each team had chances prior to the first touchdown. The Tigers were knocking on the door on their opening drive but fumbled on the one yard line to keep the game knotted at 0-0. Ferrum drove the ball 94 yards on the ensuing drive but came up empty on a failed 20-yard field goal attempt.

The first points came with under two minutes to play in the first quarter on a six-yard run from Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale).

The Tigers later fumbled again, and the Panthers capitalized with a touchdown three plays later to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

With just over a minute to play in the half, the Tigers reclaimed the lead at 14-7 as Cobb hit Major Morgan (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy) for a 24-yard touchdown strike.

The half was not over, however, as Ferrum drove 58 yards in under a minute and converted a two-point attempt to take a 15-14 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter then was all Panthers as they scored 17 unanswered points to take a 32-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers ended the scoring drought with just under six minutes to play with a 42-yard field goal from Rhett Andersen (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson).

With under a minute to play, the Tigers got two more points as Ferrum took a safety to help run out the clock and prevent a possible touchdown.

On the day, the Tigers had 402 yards of offense on 315 passing and 87 rushing, but they were hampered by four turnovers. Cobb was 35-of-53 for 310 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Morgan led all receivers with 13 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin County) had seven catches for 56 yards, and Blake Page (Richmond, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot) and Ed Newman (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) combined for 89 yards on eight catches.

Smith also led the ground game with 66 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 486 yards on 226 passing and 240 rushing. Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) led the way with ten tackles, while Griffin Davis (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) and Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC/Middle Creek) each had eight stops. Matt Dooley (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) had six tackles to go with an interception.

The Tigers will remain on the road and face Washington & Lee in Lexington on Saturday, November 3. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
