HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team has announced its captains for the upcoming 2018 season. Leading the team next season will be four seniors in quarterback Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale), cornerback Brian Gwaltney (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights), safety Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover), and linebacker Chad Vanlandingham (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee).
Cobb will return under center after earning Second Team All-ODAC honors in 2017, ranking in the top three among conference quarterbacks while leading the league with a 68.9 completion percentage. He completed 295 completions on 428 attempts and 29 touchdowns to go with 3,064 passing yards.
Gwaltney also earned Second Team All-ODAC honors last season after leading the team and finishing second in the league in pass break ups (12). He also led the team with two interceptions and one blocked kick while finishing second in tackles with 59.
Mallory had a strong junior campaign, recording 59 tackles, which is second best on the team. Additionally, he had five tackles for loss and was tough in the secondary with six passes defended on one interception and five pass break ups.
Vanlandingham also averaged nearly six tackles a game last season, tallying 58 with 37 solo stops. He also had five tackles-for-loss which included 0.5 sacks. He added one fumble recovery as well.
The Tigers kick off the 2018 season with the Rally in Richmond where they will scrimmage Greensboro College on August 25 at the Redskins Bon Secours training facility.
The regular season will begin on the road as they travel to Danville, Virginia on Saturday, September 1 to face the Cougars of Averett University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
