Hampden-Sydney Baseball Splits At Bridgewater 0-5, 4-3

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Junior Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen had two hits and two RBIs, and classmate Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield added two hits and one RBI in the second game, while Bartlett and junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach each had two hits in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road doubleheader at Bridgewater College on Saturday in Bridgewater.  Sophomore Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House gained the pitching victory in the 4-3 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (14-4-2, 8-7-1), and junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. earned a save, while classmate Chase Mayberry/Appomattox took the mound setback in the 0-5 opener against the host Eagles (12-19, 6-10).

In game two, H-SC scored four runs on 10 hits with two runs in the first inning, one run in the third and one run in the fourth.  The Tigers took leads of 2-0, 3-0 and 4-1 toward the final margin of victory as BC made it a one-run game with a final run in the eighth inning.

In the first, Spagnolo (2-4, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run double down the right field line with one out to score both senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-2) and Counts (1-4).  Blevins had singled, followed by a double from Counts.

In the third, junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-3, RBI) added a two-out, RBI single to plate Blevins, who had walked.

In the fourth, senior Blake Hartman/Chester (0-3) drew a walk and later crossed the plate when Bartlett (2-5, RBI) provided an RBI ground ball.

Junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (2-4) contributed two hits, including a double.

Webb (2-3) started and pitched 8.1 solid innings for the win, scattering five hits and three runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and two walk.  Meyers (1) recorded the final two outs for his first save this season, yielding one hit and no runs with one strikeout and no walks.

In game one, H-SC had six hits, but was shutout for the first time this season.

Bartlett (2-4) and Counts (2-4) each had two hits for the Tigers, including a double by Bartlett.  Freshman Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-4) added a double, as well.

Mayberry (3-3) started and pitched the 8.0 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC will return home to host the University of Lynchburg for an ODAC game on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
