VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach had three hits, including a home run and a double, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Virginia Beach.  Freshman Kieran Conway/Chesapeake took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (11-11-1, 5-6 ODAC) against the host Marlins (12-9, 8-3 ODAC).

H-SC had four runs on nine hits … scoring one run in the sixth inning, one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.  VWU scored eight runs in the second inning and the margin remained that way until the sixth.

In the sixth, Counts (3-4, RBI) hit a two-out, solo home run – his team-leading third homer this season.

In the seventh, sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-3, RBI) walked to open the frame and later crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball by junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (0-5, RBI).

In the eighth, senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-3) drew a walk to begin the at-bat, and scored on an RBI single by Clawson.  Counts, who also singled during the inning, crossed the plate, as well, when junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (1-4, RBI) reached base via an error.

Conway (0-2) started and pitched the first 1.2 innings, yielding six hits and eight runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House tossed the final 6.1 scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC will play welcome Averett University for a non-conference contest on Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m. at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.
