WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen hit a game-winning grand slam home run in the top of the 12th inning to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 7-3 non-conference baseball road win at Marymount University on Wednesday at the Nationals Youth Academy in Washington, D.C.  Juniors Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake and Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield each had two hits for the visiting Tigers (3-3), while sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley gained the pitching victory in relief against the host Saints (1-4).

H-SC had seven runs on eight hits … scoring one run in the first inning, one run in the third, one run in the fifth and four runs in the 12th for the thrilling victory.  The Tigers trailed 2-1 after one, tied it at 2-2 in the third, before each team scored in the fifth to make it 3-3, a score that stood until the third extra inning.

Kasiski (2-5, 2 RBIs) started the scoring in the first with a one-out RBI single that scored Triesler (2-4, 2 2Bs), who had doubled.  In the third, junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (1-3) was hit-by-a-pitch to open the frame, stole second and later crossed the plate with two outs courtesy of another run-scoring single by Kasiski.  In the fifth, Triesler opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground ball out and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from senior Tyler Blevins/Draper (0-2, RBI).

The Tigers won it in the 12 inning via the dramatic grand slam home run by Spagnolo (1-5, HR, 4 RBIs).  The frame began with a walk by Triesler, followed by Kasiski getting hit-by-a-pitch, before Blevins was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.  Spagnolo promptly slammed his homer over the left field fence for his first round-tripper this season, and the second home run of his career.

Clawson (1-0) pitched the final 1.1 innings for the win, allowing two hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Freshman Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, scattering four hits and three runs, two earned, with a season-high eight strikeouts and three walks.  Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. tossed the next 5.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Triesler pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Hampden-Sydney will return home to host the H-SC Classic this weekend, March 1-3, at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.  The Tigers are scheduled to play St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m., followed by a game against Frostburg State University on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m.
