CARY, N.C. -- Senior Blake Hartman/Chester had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in the first game, while Hartman and junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield each had three hits, and senior Tyler Blevins/Draper hit a home run in the second game, as Hampden-Sydney College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader on the road at William Peace University on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Sophomore Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House gained the pitching victory in the 5-2 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (1-1), and Triesler earned a save, while junior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox took the pitching setback in the 4-6 opener against the host Pacers (3-4).
In game two, H-SC had five runs on nine hits … scoring one run in the third inning, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and one run in the seventh for the seven-inning victory. The Tigers trailed 2-0 after two innings before rallying for the come-from-behind win and split of the two games.
Junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (0-3, RBI) put H-SC on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring Hartman (3-4, 2B), who had reached on a single. Junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (1-3, RBI) and Triesler (3-3, 2B, RBI) each contributed run-scoring singles in the fourth, plating junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (1-3, 2B, RBI) and Bartlett, respectively, as Counts had reached on a double. Blevins (1-2, HR, RBI) led-off the fifth with a solo home run to right field, while Counts added a sac fly RBI in the seventh, scoring Blevins, who had been hit-by-a-pitch to open the frame.
Webb (1-0) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the win, scattering six hits and two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Triesler (1) tossed the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. pitched a scoreless inning, as well, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
In game one, H-SC had four runs on three hits … scoring one run in the first inning and three runs in the third. The Tigers fell behind 5-1 after two innings, closed to within 5-4 through three, but did not score again as WPU added a run in the seventh.
Hartman (2-4, HR, 3 RBIs) opened the game and season for the Tigers with a lead-off homer to right field in the first. He followed with a two-run single in the third, scoring junior Sam Feliciano/Bristow (0-3) and Bartlett (1-2), who had been hit-by-a-pitch and singled, respectively. Hartman later crossed the plate during the at-bat courtesy of a bases-loaded balk.
Mayberry (0-1) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched the final 3.0 innings, yielding no hits and one run, unearned, with one strikeout and five walks.
The originally-scheduled third game of the weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 17, at H-SC has been canceled due to the inclement weather. The Tigers will play on the road at non-conference opponent Averett University on Monday, Feb. 18, at 2:30 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field in Danville.
