WINCHESTER, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell 15-4 at Shenandoah this afternoon in the first game of the 2018 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The first round is a best two-out-of-three series, and the two teams will meet again at Shenandoah tomorrow at 2:00 PM. In the game, the Tigers will play as the home team. The Tigers now stand at 17-20 overall while the Hornets improve to 29-10.
The Hornets took the early lead and never gave it up after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first.
Shenandoah pushed its lead back in the third with two more runs.
As Colin Morse kept the Tiger batters at bay, Shenandoah was able to produce two big innings with five runs in each the fifth and eighth innings.
Hampden-Sydney was able to add to the scoreboard in the ninth, with Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS)scoring on a passed ball and Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) scored on an RBI-single from Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes).
Offensively, the Tigers had five hits to Shenandoah's 15.
On the mound, Harrison Moncure (Glen Allen, VA/Mills Godwin) was the pitcher of decision, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry)threw 2.2 innings, allowing five runs – one earned – on five hits with four strikeouts. Trent Jacobs (Farmville, VA/Fuqua)surrendered five runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings, and Cameron Meyers (Benson, NC/West Johnston) recorded the final two outs for the Tigers.
Morse picked up the win for the Hornets after allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and six walks with eight strikeouts in eight innings.
