HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team picked up a key conference win, defeating Virginia Wesleyan 6-4. The Tigers now have just two conference games remaining in the regular season. They now stand at 15-18 overall and 8-10 in ODAC play. The Marlins drop to 24-11 on the season and 14-4 in league play.
Though the Marlins took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was short lived as Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) hit a two-run homerun in bottom of the inning.
Virginia Wesleyan took the lead right back with two runs in the second, but the Tigers used the long ball again with Matthew Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) hitting a lead off homerun to tie the game at 3-3.
The back-and-forth continued in the fourth with Virginia Wesleyan scoring in the top of the inning, and Hampden-Sydney tying it right back up as Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) batting in Spagnolo. Counts then gave the Tigers the lead with a two-RBI single.
After early scoring for both teams, however, it was pitching that won for the rest of the way with neither team scoring over the final four and a half innings.
On the mound, Triesler threw the first 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) allowed one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) threw 1.2 scoreless innings, and Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph Henry) closed out the game to pick up his first save of the season.
Offensively, the Tigers had ten hits, with Counts, Spagnolo, and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) each had two.
Hampden-Sydney will wrap up conference play on Saturday, April 28 as the Tigers travel to Greensboro to face Guilford College in a double header. Game one is slated to start at 1:00 PM.
