Jayson Maitland

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers returned to the win column while splitting a conference doubleheader with the Eagles of Bridgewater College. Both games were back-and-forth throughout, with the Eagles taking a 7-5 win in game one, and the Tigers returning the favor with an 12-7 win in the second game. The Tigers now stand at 11-12 overall and 5-5 in ODAC play, while the Eagles are 16-12-1 on the season and 5-8 in conference.

It took two and a half innings to break the 0-0 tie in game one, and is was Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) who helped get the Tigers on the board, batting in Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) on an RBI-triple. Two batters later, Bartlett then scored on a base knock from Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River).

The 2-0 lead was short lived though as Bridgewater used a pair of doubles to help score three runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers continued the scoring into the bottom of the inning, and an RBI-single from Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville) drove home Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) to tie the game at 3-3.

The home team scored in its third consecutive inning, as an error by the pitcher allowed Bartlett to score for the second time in the game and give the Tigers the lead back at 4-3. Triesler then scored on an RBI from Kasiski to put the Tigers up 5-3 after five.

The back-and-forth scoring continued in the top of the seventh as the Eagles scored four runs to reclaim the lead at 7-5.

Eagle pitching then kept the Tigers at bay to secure the win for Bridgewater.

On the mound, Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) went four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with a strikeout. Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph Academy) allowed three runs on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts, and Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) surrendered a run on a hit and walk with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Offensively, the Tigers had 11 hits to Bridgewater's six. Bartlett, Triesler, and Matthew Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) each had two hits.

In game two, the Tigers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring before the first out was recording and putting three runs on the board in the first, with Bartlett, Triesler, and Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) all scoring.

Bridgewater matched the three runs in the top of the second, but the Tigers reclaimed the lead in the bottom frame with Bartlett scoring Clawson on a sacrifice fly.

Bridgewater tied the game again with a run in the fourth.

The Tigers took the lead back with a run from Spagnolo as Clawson batted him in in the bottom of the sixth.

The lead flipped again in the seventh, with three runs from the Eagles putting Bridgewater up 7-5.

Counts tied the game back up in the bottom of the inning, with a two-RBI double.

Clawson then helped give the Tigers the lead in the eighth, batting in Spagnolo. Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) then hit a bloop single to give the Tigers some insurance, scoring Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski). Bartlett then drove in two more to make it 11-7 in favor of the Tigers. Before the inning was over, Kasiski drove in one more run to give the Tigers their final five run cushion.

Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) threw the first six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning three batters. Evan Lester (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings. Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) picked up the win while pitching  2.1 scoreless innings.

Offensively, the Tigers had 11 hits, with Triesler, Counts, Clawson, and Maitland all recording two.
