Tigers Fall 10-7 at Apprentice

Moe Gothe

NEWPORT NEWS, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team had a five game win streak snapped, falling 10-7 at the Apprentice School on Friday afternoon. The game was back and forth the whole way, but the Builders scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to help them to victory. The Tigers now stand at 10-5 on the season but remain a perfect 4-0 in ODAC play; the Apprentice School improves to 17-8.

The Builders scored first with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Tigers tied the game in the fourth when Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) hit an RBI double to score Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian).

The teams would then trade runs as Apprentice reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the lead was short lived as Hampden-Sydney struck again in the top of the fifth, when Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) hit a bases clearing double to put the Tigers up 4-2 with Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS), Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca), Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) crossing the plate.

One run in each the fifth and sixth from Apprentice tied the game again at 4-4 in the sixth.

The Tigers broke the tie in the seventh with Smith and Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville) scoring, but the Builders scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game again at 6-6.

The Builders then added four runs in the eighth to take the lead for good.

Hampden-Sydney would add one more in the ninth as Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batted in his second run of the day, driving in Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).

Offensively, the Tigers had 15 hits to Apprentice's 12. Gothe led the way, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Blevins went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and three RBI.

The Tigers used seven pitchers on the mound, with Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox), Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial), and Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) all throwing two innings.

The Tigers return to action Monday, March 26 as they host the Captains of Christopher Newport University. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
