EMORY, VA-The Tigers baseball team remains undefeated in conference play, after its incredibly productive offense accounted for 28 runs in a two game sweep at Emory & Henry. The Tigers now stand at 10-4 on the season and 4-0 in the ODAC after wins of 19-3 and a comeback 9-8 win in 12 innings. The Wasps are now 6-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Despite scoring 19 runs in the first game, it was a close contest through the first third of the game with a 0-0 score through two innings. The Tigers then took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) scored on a wild pitch.

It was in the middle third of the game that the Tigers got hot, scoring six runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, and seven in the sixth to take a commanding 19-0 lead midway through the sixth. Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) led all players in that stretch, batting in one run in each of the three innings while also scoring two of his own. Triesler also scored three more times to finish the game with four runs and a perfect 3-for-3 mark at the plate.

Emory & Henry was able to crack the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the eighth.

Offensively, the Tigers had 22 hits with Triesler and Bartlett each having three, and six Tigers had two hits.

Chase Mayberry (Appmattox, VA/Appomattox) improved to 2-1 on the mound, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings of work. Dillon Hall (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan), Wyatt Brock (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam), and Evan Lester (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) all pitched one inning.

The second game was much closer throughout, and it was the Tigers again taking the first lead with two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run shot from Devin Daugherty (Norcorss, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian). Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) made scored in the top of the fifth followed by an RBI-ground out from Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) that scored Triesler to put the Tigers up 4-0.

The Wasps responded, however, in the sixth with four runs to tie the game and then again in the seventh with a run to give them their first lead of the day at 5-4.

The lead vanished in the ninth as Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) was hit by a pitch in the ninth with the bases loaded to bring in Bartlett and give the Tigers a chance in extras.

After two scoreless, the Tigers took full advantage in the 12 inning, with Daugherty and Kasiski scoring before Bartlett drove in two runs on a double.

Emory & Henry made a valiant effort in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs but Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) recorded the final out to get the save and the Tigers a 9-8 win. Triesler picked up the win after allowing three runs – just one earned – on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Tigers had 11 hits with Bartlett, Kasiski, and Triesler leading the way with two a piece.

The Tigers return to action Wednesday, March 21 as they travel to Lynchburg to face the Hornets of Lynchburg. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
