HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell 2-0 to Moravian in a pitcher's duel on the second day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. The two offenses only produced nine hits to go with one error on each side, but it was the Greyhounds who were able to cross the plate twice.
Sophomores Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) and Cameron Meyers (Benson, NC/West Johnston) each had strong performances. Mayberry threw the first six innings, allowing one run in the third inning and holding the Greyhounds to two hits and two walks while fanning six.
Meyers also struck out six in three innings, allowing an unearned run in the top of the ninth.
Offensively, Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) produced three of the fives hits for the Tigers, going 3-of-4 at the plate. Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) and Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville) each recorded one hit.
Nicholas Mazella got the win for Moravian, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts. Brendon Caraway earned the save after three scoreless, giving up just one hit while striking out three.
Hampden-Sydney will wrap up the action of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament tomorrow afternoon as they face the Wolverines of Wesley College at 3:00 PM.
