HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team improved to 1-0 on the season while defeating Stevenson 4-1 in the first day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. The Tigers had strong pitching performances, holding the Mustangs to off the board until the eighth inning and giving up just six hits on the day.
Junior Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) picked up the win, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out two, walking two, and surrendering five hits.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thoams Dale) in the fourth were able to score Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) and Spivak, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Stevenson did cross the plate in the top of the eighth, but Charles Murrah (Tallahassee, FL/Maclay School) got a two-out strikeout with the bases loaded to limit the damage.
Basse also threw one scoreless inning, and Murrah struck out two in his inning of work.
Sophomore Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) earned the save after retiring all three batters he faced with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Spivak led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two doubles.
Hampden-Sydney has a quick turnaround and will play Moravian tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM in the second day of the Wilcox Tournament.
