HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell 6-3 to Virginia Wesleyan in mid-week ODAC action. The game was tied through the first four innings, but the Marlins scored three runs in the fifth to give them enough of a cushion to take the win. Hampden-Sydney falls to 15-12 on the season and 4-5 in ODAC play, while the Marlins improve to 14-12 overall and 5-5 in conference.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. After Virginia Wesleyan scored in the top on a two-out single, Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) knocked in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) on an RBI-single. The Tigers almost added more, loading the bases with no outs, but Virginia Wesleyan's Chance Pauley pitched the Marlins out of the bind.
After two scoreless, the Marlins reclaimed the lead with a run in the fourth and then added three more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead midway through the game.
The Tigers got back on the board in the bottom of the seventh, with Goodwyn batting in two more runs, scoring Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) and Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS) on a triple.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 6-3 with a run in the top of the ninth, and then Riley Koonce was able to close it out for the Marlins and collect his sixth save of the season.
Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) was the pitcher of decision, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk with a strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) threw 1.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits.
Offensively, the Tigers had seven hits to Virginia Wesleyan's 14. Goodwyn and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) each had two hits while Goodwyn batted in all three of the Tigers' runs.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action Saturday, April 8 as the Tigers travel to Bridgewater for a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
