HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team split its Old Dominion Athletic Conference double header with the Wasps of Emory & Henry on Saturday, winning the first game 10-0 before falling in the second contest 5-4. The Tigers now stand at 11-7 overall and 1-3 in ODAC play, and Emory & Henry is 10-12 overall and 1-3 in conference.
The Tigers took game one behind another complete game shutout from freshman Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox). Mayberry kept the Wasps off the board while limiting the offense to just five hits. The Tigers, however, had hot bats, scoring their runs on 18 hits while adding to the board in five of their eight innings at bat.
The Tigers then added four more in the sixth, going up 6-0. Maitland struck again, this time batting in Blevins and Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale). Maitland later scored in the inning on a Fontana triple, and then Fontana was driven in by Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) to cap off the inning.
A Blevins RBI-groundout in the seventh drove in Goodwyn while extending the lead to 7-0.
Before it was over the team added three more in the bottom of the eighth. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) started the action by batting in Smith. Goodwyn then drove in Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes), and Gothe later rounded the bases on a Daugherty RBI-single.
Mayberry surrendered just five hits and a walk with six strikeouts in nine shutout innings.
Daugherty led the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 day.
The Tigers wasted no time in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning, with Gothe and Goodwyn both crossing the plate.
Emory & Henry cut into the lead in the top of the third, scoring its first run of the day.
Hampden-Sydney extended its lead with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Blevins scored on an RBI-double from Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River). Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) followed that up with a run in the fifth.
Emory & Henry continued to battle, coming within one with two runs in the sixth and then taking the lead with two more in the sixth.
The Wasps' Alex Laws was able to close out the game and keep the Tigers off the board.
Offensively, the Tigers had eight hits to Emory & Henry's nine. Goodwyn, Blevins, and Fontana led the way with two hits each.
On the mound, Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) was the pitcher of decision, allowing five runs – just one earned – one seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Maitland threw the final two, shutting out the Wasps while giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Hampden-Sydney will continue play this weekend, hosting Frostburg State on Sunday, March 18. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
