Tigers Hold On For 12-8 Win Over Ferrum

FERRUM, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team snapped a three-game skid, holding on for a 12-8 win over Ferrum on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out to an 11-2 lead after six innings, but the Panthers scored six runs over the next three innings to make the game much closer. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 10-6 on the season; Ferrum falls to 9-10.

Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) put the Tigers on the board in the second, scoring on a passed ball. Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin) then scored on an RBI by Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) to go up 2-0.

Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) batted in Josh Duimstra (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) in the third to up the lead to 3-0.

Maitland then scored in the fourth, along with Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) and Bartlett, to double the Tiger lead to 6-0.

Ferrum was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, but the Tigers pushed it back up in the top of the fifth with a three-run homerun from Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).  

A two-RBI triple from Cody Smith, that scored Peevey and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill), in the sixth gave the Tigers a commanding 11-2 lead.  

Ferrum got hot late with three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to make it a 11-7 game.

Hampden-Sydney pushed it up to 12-7 as Smith scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth.

The Panthers tacked on one more in the bottom of the ninth, but Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) was able to close out the game.

Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) picked up the win after throwing the first six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Cameron Meyers (Benson, NC/West Johnston) had three earned runs against him after walking three batters, and Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings. Celata allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout in the ninth.

Offensively, the Tigers had 13 hits to Ferrum's 12. Goodwyn was 4-for-6, and Daugherty was 3-for-4.

Hampden-Sydney returns home and will host Emory & Henry in a conference double header on Saturday, March 18. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
