GREENSBORO, NC-The Baseball Tigers fell in non-conference action this afternoon as Greensboro downed Hampden-Sydney 10-3. The Tigers held an early 2-0 lead, but Greensboro took a lead in the fifth, and then reclaimed the lead and scored six runs in the eighth to hold on. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 9-6 on the season, while Greensboro improves to 15-7.
Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) gave the Tigers the first lead in the second, scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) was then driven in by Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) to put the Tigers up 2-0.
Greensboro got on the board in the fifth, scoring three runs to go up 3-2.
The Pride took the lead back with one run in the bottom of the seventh, and then added six insurance runs in the eighth to take the 10-3 lead.
On the mound for the Tigers, Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) was the pitcher of decision, allowing one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) allowed six runs on six hits and a walk with a strikeout in 0.2 innings, and Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) got the final out for the Tigers.
Offensively, the Tigers had nine hits to Greensboro's 15. Wiles went 3-for-4 while Gothe and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) each had two hits.
The Tigers will stay on the road and face Ferrum tomorrow, Thursday, March 16. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
